Stars and stripes: eco-friendly fashion for the summer

Stars and stripes styles from ethical and sustainable designers for summer 2016

Temperatures have touched the 90s, Memorial Day weekend is just passed… Yay! Summer is finally here! One of my favorite summer styles has always been stripes, they remind me the classic Breton sailor look and therefore sea and beach, but in the U.S., summer stripes are also paired with stars the patriotic theme that leads up to the celebration of Independence Day on the 4th of July.  Stripes have been very popular throughout the last few seasons, the selection has been really difficult, but here are my favorite stars and stripes styles for 2016 from ethical and sustainable designers.

Cool in every sense of the word, I love this original shoulderless take on the classic boyfriend shirt. Not only it is totally feminine but also perfect for the hot summer temperatures. It is made of lightweight challis from surplus fabric. Available at The Reformation

How many stars are you? The delightful Lucky Stars necklace designed by Catherine Weitzman shows off your family constellation, with a star for the mother and each of her offsprings cast from real starfish. It is set in a sterling silver chain, a with a single large star and up to four smaller stars of 18k gold vermeil. Available exclusively at UncommonGoods.com

The Valerie beach bag by JadeTribe features another great thick striped classic pattern. Handles and shoulder straps make it easy to carry even when exploring deserted wild beaches (my favorites!), while the tasseled colored shell charms are just the right detail to liven up the whole piece. Found on JadeTribe.com

A contemporary take on the classic striped shirt: 3/4 sleeves, uneven hems and scoop neck. Given the heatwave that has already engulfed NYC at the end of May, loose fitting seems always attractive. This shirt is available at Amour Vert, which has a whole section devoted to stripes (classic and not!)

These vegan friendly wedges are going to be a hit at any Fourth of July Party! White, red and blue grosgrain ribbons cross in the front, while the heel and straps are navy blue. The wedge is made of stacked wood and it has rubber sole for traction. Available at Tom’s.

Classic sailor stripes for this H&M sleeveless shirt from the Conscious Collection. Easy to match with almost any style of pants (jeggings, drawstring, jeans..), only remember no more patterns, block color only with stripes!

The Cosmos bangles are made by the PeaceBomb project using recycled metals from the unexploded bombs left in Laos, thus transforming materials for death into materials of beauty and love. The bracelets are made of recycled aluminum and the symbols are set in gold (shown) or sterling silver. Found on Article22
